Wild opinion, but the majority of public school parents are normal people who work for a living and do not want genital-obsessed, home-schooling, social media stunting, adults in charge of their kids' education. https://www.thedailybeast.com/moms-for-liberty-candidates-taught-a-lesson-in-2023-elections

‘The analysis estimates that 1.5–2% of all scientific papers published in 2022 closely resemble paper-mill works. Among biology and medicine papers, the rate rises to 3%."

A recent study of more than 800,000 people led by Fabio Angeli 🇮🇹has shown that #COVID19 patients develop high #bloodpressure twice as often as others. More worrying is that the risk of #cardiacdiseases can also rise for patients who suffered only mild #COVID symptoms.

"The whole episode left me wondering what purpose it serves to penalize those who want to stay at the same institution for multiple career stages. It’s often said in academia that 'moving around a lot is necessary.' But the reality is that moving is a huge barrier for many scientists, including those with spouses, children, aging parents, disabilities, and cultural backgrounds that emphasize a close-knit extended family community—the kinds of people academia is actively trying to recruit to its ranks."

"The aftermath of the first lockdown in 2020 was an opportunity to make choices, to learn from the global experience of the first months of the pandemic, and to plan for the coming winter. Serious people all over the world were working all hours to understand what had happened, what was happening then, and what could happen in the future under various public health measures. The emerging evidence from the Covid inquiry shows that this seriousness did not make it into Britain’s government."

"Tuberculosis, which is preventable and curable, has reclaimed the title of the world’s leading infectious disease killer, after being supplanted from its long reign by Covid-19. But worldwide, 40 percent of people who are living with TB are untreated and undiagnosed, according to the World Health Organization."

"The Brazilian authorities, however, say it was something far more sinister: a meeting of the Hammerskins, a neo-Nazi group founded in Dallas in 1988 that they say has recently found its way thousands of miles south, to Brazil’s most starkly conservative region, reflecting a surge in far-right extremists in Latin America’s largest nation."

"What we are focused on now is the expansion of biological specificity. Modern quantitative biology has great instrumentation to measure how things work physiologically, but that needs really specific readouts; if the reagent that you are using is not specific enough, then your assay probably won't be very good."
It seems #AI will enhance our skills and abilities. One thing I always struggle is keeping up with the scientific literature, so I am testing some tools.
I tried elicit.com, it promises to find useful papers from the literature, so I tested it: e.g. I searched
"Phenotype of p50 knockout in human macrophage", output: 1st paper is on p21, 2nd on overexpression (not knockout), 3rd-5th on murine macrophages (not human).
Same search on Google or DuckDuckGo gives much better results.

'Concerns over zoonotic diseases have greatly increased since the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus emerged in China in late 2019 and spread swiftly across the globe. A study published by BMJ Global Health on Thursday found that environmental and population changes over the past six decades were driving growing numbers of such “spillover events” such as that which caused the coronavirus pandemic.'
