Doctors are getting inundated with patients' requests for wildly popular new anti-obesity drugs, including from many who don't really need them. t.co/rp3zDM7UFq

I've blocked the whole domain. Their business model and my interests are orthogonal.

I follow about 50 accounts on Threads, mostly science and tech, and post occasionally about science and tech.

Yet, this is what the Threads algorithm thinks is of interest to me.

So far Threads has been 100% useless. Looks like I’m not the only one, judging from @reichenstein‘s posts of his experience.

Dutch astronomer, planetary scientist, selenographer Gerard Peter Kuiper died #OTD in 1973.

Kuiper discovered two natural satellites of planets in the Solar System, namely Uranus's satellite Miranda and Neptune's satellite Nereid. In addition, he discovered carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of Mars, and the existence of a methane-laced atmosphere above Saturn's satellite Titan in 1944. He is considered by many to be the father of modern planetary science. via @wikipedia

'A century ago, August Krogh, a Danish physiologist who had just won the Nobel Prize, embarked on a U.S. lecture tour. Krogh studied the intricate network of blood vessels that nourish our muscles, but he was increasingly interested in diabetes—a condition that his wife, the physician Marie Krogh, not only treated but also suffered from. Marie asked her husband to stop in Toronto, where a surgeon and a medical student had experimented with “pancreatic extract,” which appeared to shift sugar from the bloodstream into muscles and other organs. Krogh returned to Denmark with permission to sell the stuff. He and some colleagues started Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium, and in the spring of 1923 they injected their first patients with an early miracle drug: insulin.'

"Through tissue-specific manipulation of Nptx2, the authors demonstrated that the pituitary was a major source of NPTX2 in the serum, and the increased NPTX2 secretion by the pituitary affected immune balance by regulating the blood neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio. Intriguingly, Nptx2 up-regulation in corticotropes seemed to depend on IL-6 but not other cytokines tested."

"Exercise rapidly induced expansion of the muscle Treg compartment, thereby guarding against overexuberant production of interferon-γ and consequent metabolic disruptions, particularly mitochondrial aberrancies."

"Most human genome assemblies provide a record of this ancient evolution, but fail to resolve ongoing LINE-1 retrotranspositions. Utilizing the human CHM1 long-read-based haploid assembly, we identified and cloned all full-length, intact LINE-1s, and found 29 LINE-1s with measurable in vitro retrotransposition activity."

'La formación ha presentado un proyecto de ley en el Senado que pretende blindar la costumbre de montar belenes en las escuelas en la época navideña y que contempla sanciones para los funcionarios que no lo permitan o impulsen celebraciones alternativas, sin carga religiosa, en estas fechas.'

"At the Russell Sage Foundation, Professor Solow, long interested in the social effects of economics, supervised a major project studying low-wage work in five advanced economies in Europe and the United States. The study found that such work was far more prevalent in the United States than in the other countries, and that the living conditions of low-wage workers were better in Europe because of a more generous social-safety net there, along with rules that provided workers with greater bargaining power."

“A startling statistic emerged in Paris last month: during the morning and evening rush hours, on representative main thoroughfares crisscrossing the French capital, there are now more bicycles than cars – almost half as many again, in fact.” #Paris

"More climate scientists clearly want to do this work. There is a highly motivated and diverse pool of talented researchers who would make excellent scientist-communicators. I regularly receive messages from early-career scientists, undergraduates and secondary-school students, who ask me how my dual role came to be and how they could fill a similar niche. Yet I struggle to give them specific advice because, at present, there is no clear or replicable path."
