It's the time of the year for picking the top science stories of 2023. There were triumphs, yes. But for my newsletter, I picked a different kind of story: the struggle to bring back the American chestnut tree, and what it really takes to address the extinction crisis. https://buttondown.email/carlzimmer/archive/fridays-elk-december-29-2023/

'Na forma, ao apontar deficiências no processo de privatização – quando, por exemplo, refere que a avaliação prévia da empresa deveria ter sido feita antes. No conteúdo, ao deixar preto no branco para memória futura duas conclusões bastante duras: a privatização “não salvaguardou o interesse público” e, além disso, traduziu-se na “concessão de um monopólio fechado por 50 anos num sector estratégico para a economia”.

Am reading “Palestinian Walks. Notes on a vanishing landscape” by Raja Shehadeh at the moment (a Christmas present). Through the deceptively simple device of 7 walks taken over 27 years near his home town Ramallah, he offers a way into SO much (devastating) history. Also love it as it combines #PoliticalEcology with #HistoricalEcology - just my thing. A beautiful book, really recommend it. #Gaza #Palestine #Bookstodon #Walks
"Until Substack, I was not aware of any major US consumer internet platform that stated it would not remove or even demonetize Nazi accounts... The Nazis did not commit the only atrocity in history, but a platform that declines to remove their supporters is telling you something important about itself.
If it won’t remove the Nazis, why should we expect the platform to remove any other harm?" @caseynewton https://www.platformer.news/p/why-substack-is-at-a-crossroads

Just as I was reminded of Suzana Herculano-Houzel's measurements of the number of cells across various vertebrate groups, the very abstract of this paper mentions the "isotropic fractionation" method invented by her.
Big evolutionary change tied to lots of small differences
Lots of genes changed as a species of snail went from laying eggs to live births.

"In addition, histological analysis of patients with ICI-associated myocarditis revealed a large number of T-cell infiltration in cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, and tumor tissues, and further T cell receptor (TCR) sequencing of the infiltrating lymphocytes revealed a high degree of clonal amplification of all three, as well as muscle-specific antigens detected in tumor tissues, suggesting that the cardiac muscle and the tumor tissues express common antigens that are used as targets by ICIs to attack and cause myocardial injury, which may be one of the mechanisms of ICI-associated cardiotoxicity [63]."
