'There were several auguries that foreshadowed the development of totalitarianism. There were racism and imperialism, as we have seen. There were mobs and nationalism in France, pre-Nazi Germany, and Austria. Demagogues whipped up emotions across the continent and authoritarians promised to resolve things for ordinary people in Portugal, Hungary, and Poland. There was fascism in Spain and Italy, which was violent and nasty, but not the total attack on politics itself which came with totalitarian regimes. Across the globe, there were totalitarian movements that gathered up the moment’s dark discontent by giving the appearance of unstoppable momentum, but which could be stopped where there was sufficient political room for resistance.'

I find it strange that governments focus on identity verification for accessing the Internet while rejecting the most basic technical controls to address the worldwide leading cause of death for children – traffic accidents. Use existing identity infrastructure to check the right to drive, payment of tax, valid insurance and safety certificate before the car can be driven. While doing that, impose appropriate speed limits. This could be done in a privacy-preserving way. https://english.elpais.com/technology/2024-01-19/experts-warn-of-the-dangers-and-difficulties-of-a-government-instituted-anti-porn-app-this-has-never-been-successful.html
#SystemsGenetics aims to understand how genetic diversity translates into phenotypic diversity, studying how information is transmitted from the #Genome through RNA proteins and beyond.

"Our results further suggest that there could be an optimal number of MHC alleles per individual and that deviations from this optimum are compensated by adjusting expression levels."
'Here, we use photo-labeling, combined with longitudinal transcriptomic and cellular analyses, to interrogate the fate of intratumoral NK cells. We reveal that NK cells rapidly lose effector functions and adopt a distinct phenotypic state with features associated with tissue residency.'

Excellent. We can't have some Schengen members unilaterally changing the rules because a loophole in one country effectively opens that same loophole throughout Schengen - at least on continental Europe.
Anyway, why the hell should Britons get any different treatment compared to citizens of any other 3rd country? To quote a Tory, Brexit means Brexit. Doesn't it?

'Proactively seek out content or conversations relevant to you and your work, and reshare or respond to them. You may want to tag other users in order to reach out to or credit them for their work but do so considerately. We have found that tagging authors is more effective than tagging their institutions. Hashtags can also extend your reach but should be used sparingly to avoid making your text look cluttered and “spammy”.'

I have been mystified why K represented Lysine for many years. Undergrad #biochemistry lecturer said “I don't know why, but I assume it is because of the end of the side chain looks like a K”. Well, turns out the answer is more simple.

'We didn’t get a name for algorithms until a couple thousand years later, when European scholars translated Kitab al-Jabr wa-l-Muqabala (“The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing”), the landmark work of Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi, from Arabic to Latin. Those researchers also Latinized al-Khwarizmi’s name to “Algoritmi,” which was then used to describe mathematical processes. We also get the word “algebra” from the book’s shortened title (Al-Jabr).'

Welp, I'm done with Substack. I'm in the process of migrating over to Beehiiv, which will likely take me all day, with tweaks over the weekend, but the plan is my next Monday newsletter will come from Beehiiv.

Latest data from the weekly flu and covid19 surveillance report is showing an uptick in flu but also rhinovirus (which causes cold like symptoms). It’s not too late to get a flu vaccine which can be purchased from chemist/supermarkets.
