'Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) remains one of the deadliest major cancers, contrasting a relatively low incidence rate1. The primary reasons for this are related to the difficulty with early detection and a lack of effective therapeutic options. A principal barrier to treatment of pancreatic cancer is the densely fibrotic tumor microenvironment, the high interstitial pressure of which acts to collapse blood vessels and impair the delivery of chemotherapy. This lack of functional vasculature leads to deregulated nutrient availability within the tumor, causing cancer cells to develop numerous metabolic adaptations to allow for proliferation under hypoxic and austere conditions'

Interesting to see that Editas has paused their #CRISPR clinical trial on Leber congenital amaurosis. More a strategic decision rather than safety concerns over CRISPR therapy.
Here's a terrific new paper from one of my classmates about #ImmuneCheckpointInhibitor induced #myocarditis. This work finds that CD8+ T-cells are the critical mediator of heart inflammation, and identifies the alpha-myosin cardiac protein as a candidate autoantigen: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-022-05432-3 #science #medicine #immunology #cardiology #oncology #Tcell #genomics #scRNAseq
While carbonidiots of PS & PSD fervently debate new airport locations, I can't get to Madrid by train from Lisbon.
Let's hope this is for real
"Todo ello ocurre, sin embargo, en un momento en el que las líneas ferroviarias entre Madrid y Lisboa siguen atascadas: no existe un tren directo desde que se suspendió hace tres años, algo que solo había ocurrido durante la guerra."

40 years of Love & Rockets
"There were Chicana punk rockers and Southern California skinheads; entire panels of untranslated Spanish; horn-headed gajillionaires and female ex-gang members; and a dialogue-free, noirish fever dream about writer’s block. There were dozens of characters who looked a lot like the people the brothers grew up around, eating, sleeping, laughing, partying, and grousing about work. Much of “Rockets” was set in Huerta, nicknamed Hoppers, a majority Latino town not unlike Oxnard."

"Six and a half years after voting to leave the European Union, three years after the formal departure, two years after signing a post-Brexit trade deal with Brussels and one month after installing its fourth prime minister since the 2016 referendum, Britain is caught in — what else? — another debate over Brexit."

Excellent new paper from Kyle David finding evidence for a latitudinal gradient of polyploidy in animals. This is similar to what has been observed in plants for many years! Really wonderful! Also good to see our recently published Animal Chromosome Count Database used for the analyses!

Neutrophils are immune cells that do a lot of traveling (through the blood and into tissues) to get to sites of infection. Their large and stiff nuclei might it difficult for them to navigate through small spaces in tissues. So, how do they do it? Calì, Vargas, Viola, and colleagues showed that the signal that recruits neutrophils to target sites also makes their nuclei pliable so that they can squeeze through the gaps! In the upper right corner of the room we see the usual artifacts of the so-called book industry: a bound book, an unbound book, loose paper sheets in different formats, fresh and used papers. A learned setting and everyday business of dealing with paper and knowledge. This is what #BookHistory usually looks at. All these old and new, big and small books, and all kind of bookish formats were paper products, paper worlds made of paper. #BookHistory of early modern Europe is #PaperHistory.

"The great success of the AlphaFold programs poses the following questions: (i) What is the main reason for this success? (ii) What exactly do AlphaFolds do: prediction of the 3D protein structure based on its amino acid sequence and knowledge of the protein physics or recognition of this 3D structure, based on the similarity between some parts of its amino acid sequence and parts of sequences with already known 3D structures?"

Today I finished proofreading and classifying the outermost layer of somas in the #drosophila lobula plate cell rind through #Flywire, mapping over 270 cells!
I've broken down my findings of cell types here: https://discuss.flywire.ai/t/gallery-of-amusements-flywire-edition/34/255?u=azurejay
I'm so thrilled to have completed this first step in mapping the outer layer of lobula plate cells - all as part of #CitizenScience!
Now it's time to go another layer deep and repeat the process. :)

Well, I guess we will have to chemotax here from Twitter.
In an attempt to preserve whatever tweets I hold (and papers dear to me), I will retweet them here.
I hope the ex-twitter current Mastodon community is okay with that.
My intro: I am an Immunologist interested in Plasma cell biology. I used to work on T cells and still love them though.
Hi #ScienceMastodon #Introduction here! I study cell fate determination and growth regulation in #Drosophila for my #PhD. Currently wrapping up at UMass Boston, and moving on to the #postdoc position soon at UMass Chan Medical School to explore new areas in epigenetics. Delighted to be here!
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
