Mary Ward died #OTD in 1869.
Ward was a keen amateur astronomer and she built the Leviathan of Parsonstown, a reflecting telescope with a six-foot mirror which remained the world's largest until 1917. Ward was a frequent visitor to Birr Castle, producing sketches of each stage of the process. Along with photographs made by Parson's wife Mary Rosse, Ward's sketches were used to aid in the restoration of the telescope. via @wikipedia

More Germans would travel by train but it's too expensive.
While some people prefer this mode of transport, experts have said that reducing tax breaks for airlines and subsidies was needed to make it more affordable.
“It doesn’t make sense if you look at the goals," train travel analyst Bernhard Knierim told Euronews.
"You should subsidise the mode of transport that you want more of, not the one you actually want to reduce."
I'm amazed I never knew of this early #entomology publication from 1634, Insectorum sive minimorum animalium theatrum: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/39877094
The illustrations are often very recognisable and well-observed. There's no English Wikipedia page for the book itself. German Wikipedia has one: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insectorum_sive_minimorum_animalium_theatrum

"Equity, Inclusion, Access, and Justice in Biology Education"
There is an urgent need in biology education – and in the life sciences more broadly – to move from discussions of “diversity” and “broadening participation” that primarily attend to numerical representation towards research and reform targeting structures, systems, and cultural assumptions.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away an outbreak of pneumocystis in our Rag colony led Jocelyne, Shohei & me to show that Tregs protect the lung from immunepathology in the course of an anti pathogen response.
'Here, our goal is to review distinct domains of Treg function in the host response to respiratory infection and subsequent lung injury and discuss open questions in the field that should be addressed as Treg-based therapeutics move into translation.'
