'She is one of the 4.2 million South Africans living with diabetes, according to 2021 estimates from the International Diabetes Federation. The prevalence has more than doubled between 2011 and 2021 and is by far the highest in sub-Saharan Africa: by 2045, more than 7.4 million South Africans could be diabetic.'

Why haven't #hospitals' & #doctors' associations spoken out about the #Medicare #drug negotiations?
Because if they supported price-fixing, they'd have to support the regulation of their own rates, which they've protested for years.
(they're also making money off of expensive drugs 👀)

Hi there!
I am a biologist working in the University of Antioquia, in Medellín, Colombia. I am mostly involved in #ComputationalBiology and #Bioinformatics, but I enjoy and work in other subjects too:
- Molecular Biology
- Genetics
- Dynamical systems (ODEs)
- Systems Biology
- Microbiology
I believe in #OpenScience and I could say that #Linux and free software changed my life.
Currently I am promoting the field of Computational Biology in Colombia: https://biologia-computacional.github.io/

'With hospitalisation rates low but rising, experts said Covid-19 cannot yet be treated as a seasonal virus like flu. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned last week that a new sub-variant, BA. 2.86, may be more able to cause infection in people who have previously had Covid-19 or been vaccinated against it, and urged the vulnerable to wear masks in public places.'

The systems approach focuses on structure–function relationships, moving from cause-and-effect thinking to synergistic thinking, by emphasizing interactions, linkages, and integrated phenotypes'

Mary Ward died #OTD in 1869.
Ward was a keen amateur astronomer and she built the Leviathan of Parsonstown, a reflecting telescope with a six-foot mirror which remained the world's largest until 1917. Ward was a frequent visitor to Birr Castle, producing sketches of each stage of the process. Along with photographs made by Parson's wife Mary Rosse, Ward's sketches were used to aid in the restoration of the telescope. via @wikipedia

More Germans would travel by train but it's too expensive.
While some people prefer this mode of transport, experts have said that reducing tax breaks for airlines and subsidies was needed to make it more affordable.
“It doesn’t make sense if you look at the goals," train travel analyst Bernhard Knierim told Euronews.
"You should subsidise the mode of transport that you want more of, not the one you actually want to reduce."
