Austrian mathematician and physicist Christian Doppler was born #OTD in 1803.
Doppler postulated his principle (Doppler effect) that the observed frequency of a wave depends on the relative speed of the source and the observer, and he later tried to use this concept to explain the visible colours of binary stars. Doppler also incorrectly believed that if a star were to exceed 136,000 kilometers per second in radial velocity, then it would not be visible to the human eye.

"By employing the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) values, we sorted the plasma proteins based on their importance in predicting different endpoints. This enabled us to identify the most important discriminators (top 1%) associated with each condition. Some proteins play crucial roles in the prediction of various diseases. Of particular note, the GDF15, which emerged as a robust predictor across all 14 categories of disorders and all-cause mortality and even ranked first among different causes of death and seven specific diseases, namely bacterial infections, anemia, mood disorders, arrhythmias, heart failure, inflammatory bowel disease, and renal failure"
The human #OAS1 protein restricts #SARSCoV2 replication, but #HorseshoeBat OAS1 has lost this ability. @spyroslytras @WilsonLabCVR &co resurrect the 60,000,000 yr old ancestral bat OAS1, revealing how this ancient #antiviral mechanism was lost #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3N6fWPx

"For years, Riek and his team have been pursuing the idea that protein-like aggregates, known as amyloids, might have played an important role in the transition between chemistry and biology."

Some good news, folks, on the booster (XBB.1.5). It induces robust levels of neutralizing antibodies vs JN.1

All the more reason to get it if you haven't already. JN.1 will likely become dominant here by the holidays
"The storyline, shaped in recent weeks by the testimony of civil servants and scientific advisers, veers between the farcical and the macabre. At the centre of the decision-making web lay an indecisive and “bamboozled” prime minister who struggled with numbers, according to diaries kept by his chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance."

"Estabeleceu-se uma igualdade e um paralelismo, puramente inventados, entre o Chega, à direita, e Bloco e PCP à esquerda. Compararam-se propostas de conteúdo racista e xenófobo com propostas de combate às desigualdades sociais e atribuiu-se-lhes a mesma gravidade."

@cyrilpedia nice study that. IL1-RA often forgotten as a regulatory element. I see it come up often in transcriptomic data, often with proinflammatory cytokines - often wondered if that's an inbuilt counter regulatory homeostatic mechanism. #immunology #bioinformatics
"The immunology behind the pandemic and, even more importantly, guidance to prevent severe disease, began to be lost in a sea of misinformation and deliberate disinformation, turning the pandemic into a political football. This led to confusion, and tragically, to decisions that unnecessarily increased morbidity and mortality. It is incumbent on us to understand what happened so we can be better prepared for future crises and, moreover, draw lessons for science communication more generally."
"As algas não servem só para alimentar peixes. Na agricultura, estes organismos podem também servir de suplemento vitamínico às alfaces, espinafres ou framboesas. O projecto que põe em prática esta tese está a ser desenvolvido pela Universidade do Algarve, através da GreenColab"

"Here we show that deletion of ST2, the receptor for interleukin (IL)-33, on Treg cells increased granulocyte influx into the lung and increased cytokine production by innate lymphoid and γδ T cells without alteration of adaptive immunity to influenza."

"Halfway through MR. MOM, I paused the film, turned to my wife and asked, 'Holy shit, is this as pro-woman as I think it is?'"
The answer is: yes, yes it is.

'That Coppola saw further than others into the future of film is argued persuasively by Wasson, although we could do without the imperial purple with which he sometimes adorns his prose. “What would stop Zoetrope,” he writes, “from reconstituting America or even world consciousness into a single living, loving adventure the size of nations and the span of lifetimes . . .?” Well. Reality? The boundaries of the possible?'
