To all the #FreeSoftware and #opensource contributors and activists out there, past and present:

Thank you, you rock.

Without your efforts, I wouldn't be where I am today.

@abhi_jl
I'd seen a lot of complaints about it and always thought "surely it can't be that bad, they must be exaggerating"... I owe an apology to all of those people now 😀

@kmj
doesn't work for for some reason, can't go beyond the initial "provide your instance" screen. It reports "Http failure response for qoto.org/api/v1/apps: 504 Gateway Timeout".

Does anyone use a desktop Mastodon client on ?

I'm trying . It has a couple nice features: keyboard navigation mainly (though even that's a bit clunky), and multi-account management. But it feels quite heavy - to blame maybe - and is pretty limited in customization options.

Twitodon twitodon.com/ serves as a connection point - if they have a mastodon and used Twitodon at any point, it'll recommend their mastodon profile to you. Even if they haven't, it'll register your twitter and mastodon association, so others can find *you* in the future.
There's also Fedifinder fedifinder.glitch.me/ that lets you check for the people you follow, and automatically extract any mastodon account mentioned in their Twitter profile.

not the original meaning of l'espirit d'escalier, but it could be applied here too

(since there's a request for a reply)
grew up vegetarian, tried meat a couple times as an adult, decided it wasn't better *enough* than the vegetarian options to override the ethical issues

I didn't even know there *were* desktop clients for Mastodon. Whalebird works for me (OpenSUSE), though I haven't done much beyond starting it and logging in. I came across Sengi while searching abt this, that one doesn't work for me but maybe will for you?
Oh, I used the AppImage for Whalebird btw. If you tried the snap install route, you could try the AppImage instead and see if that works out.

@STORM
Hmmm that timeline link loads after several seconds (almost a minute), and then shows me toots from June 2021 and going back, no recent ones.

Does types.pl block for some reason? Searching for users from there returns nothing, and trying to follow from their site leads to "error looking up this remote account"

@koehlerson
By not digital do you mean handwritten physical notes that you insert as images?
the "handwritten" part reminded me of another app I came across recently, Xournal++ github.com/xournalpp/xournalpp
Doesn't seem like it has tags or todo lists though, at least based on the README.

@w96k
2 GiB?! I often feel like a relic trying to juggle things with the 4 GiB on my laptop, since everyone seems to have 16 GiB these days! So it's good to know I'm not alone.
Unloading tabs when you're not gonna use them for a while could help (if you keep a lot of tabs open like I do). about:unloads (in Fx 94 and above)
Also, uBlock Origin, if you don't already have it. Ads slow down the pages *so* much the difference is amazing. I actually have Javascript disabled by default in the uBlock settings too, which helps even more with speeding firefox up, but that may be too extreme if you're not used to it.

@w96k
The 5 refers to 5 milliseconds, not 5 seconds.

* is called "advanced web interface" in the Mastodon settings: Preferences/Appearance [x] Enable advanced web interface
* It offers a Markdown content-type

* Retoot often! Stars are silent!

* Editing a post deletes it and re-posts it. Comments might get orphaned!

* Some instances offer more features than others: for example, qoto.org has quoted toots (RT), Groups, LaTeX, way longer toots and more!

* Most instances offer an API for bots like @poptoots. Also, there's an instance for bots only: botsin.space

Trying kakoune and helix made me (re-)realize the historical chaff in Vim's basic editing commands, quirks that I'd gotten used to over the years. Unfortunately plugins are a necessity for me in my editor, and in that area kakoune is far behind (n)vim.

@koehlerson
I don't know how much of a one-to-one match it is, but Joplin is a pretty famous alternative (there's both a GUI and a TUI).
I personally use wiki.vim (a lighter vimwiki), although in practice I barely use any of its features except page-linkage.

you're defining a type i.e. a struct, in which case specifying the types does help a lot with performance. In particular, specifying non-abstract concrete types for the fields of the struct. Since this lets know how much memory your struct is going to need, which allows it to generate optimized code. See: docs.julialang.org/en/v1/manua

“I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in my life. And I am horribly limited.” — Sylvia Plath

@lydiaconwell
Qoto supports this feature, you can add an account to a list without having to follow it
