Fediverse is the network of websites where if you have an account on one site, you can follow and talk to people on any of the other sites. So you're part of the now, and you can talk to people on mastodon.social, follow folks from scicomm.xyz, etc. It's not just limited to either, you can also follow pixelfed.org/ accounts (where people post pictures, like Instagram), lemmy.ml accounts (reddit-like), etc.
Basically it's a lot of sites with different purposes, designs, goals, etc. that choose to be and ready to communicate with each other, instead of closing down everything like facebook or twitter.

@Shreya512
That's my favourite thing about learning about traits. It brings back all the little memories that taught me I was "weird" in some unaccountable way, and makes them make sense as part of a coherent whole. It also makes them feel less isolating, knowing that there were probably other kids going through similar things in Kochi and Pune and Osaka and Hamburg at the same time.

@Shreya512
One day when I was a kid, the icecream-walla was outside, and my sister asked me "what flavour of icecream do you like the most?"
The question didn't really make sense to me, so I asked her: "What does that mean?"
She just gave me a strange look, then went out to buy the icecream.
I clearly remember the feeling of being the odd one out, feeling left out and confused about this apparently very common and expected human experience of having a strong, fixed preference for one flavour of a thing over another.

Lately more and more open source projects are becoming mainstream.

Thanks to , gaming on has become a priority while some years ago it was still niche.

@godotengine has become a very useful engine that is powering many enterprises.

And now, and the are showing us that we do not need propietary services in order to communicate with each other, which has become so difficult in the last years with all the noise that is generated by those services.

This is the era of .

@aeronlaffere
I hope it remains at least somewhat like this.

Someone said "politicians and celebrities will never bother with this, it'll be only scientists and writers and folks like that move to fedi" - as if that was a diss. That sounds great to me!

Let the drama and gossip remain on the birdsite, and let the be the place for thoughtful and curious conversation.

meta, covert marketing on fedi

@wim_v12e There will probably be some hashtag-hogging too, since those are a big tool for discovery on Fedi. Something similar happened on Reddit when it started becoming popular, people "organically" started subreddits for brands or products just because they "love it so much".

@richarddegenne
I'm lucky I was watching through SingSing's stream by that point, they were able to keep the hype and energy up despite all the (inexcusable) scuff! Were you watching via the official channel? How was the experience there?

@Khosro
Welcome! Dazed and confused is about right for your first day here, that was my experience too, years ago :blob_grinning_sweat: Take your time to look around and explore things, most stuff here isn't complicated, just different and new!

Expect some of the following to happen in the coming weeks:

- celebrities with huge follower counts pushing tiny community-run servers to their knees

- instance admin burnout; shutting down of servers

- big new servers that don't "vibe" with common rules or culture being widely defederated

- some notable account violating an instance code of conduct and throwing a fit

- lots of people ragequitting Mastodon for one reason or another

- etc.

It'll be a rough ride. Patience and strength, all.

What do you guys usually use for online communication/collaboration for research? Slack? Discord?

Have you guys explored any open-source and free alternative?

I have been using Zulip for the last couple of months or so and I must say, it is superior to either Slack or Discord! Supports LaTeX and Markdown. Threads are better organised. And the best part: you get a free license if you plan on using it for research!

Wonder why it's not that popular!

But I think looks better visually to a newcomer, more whitespace, less intimidating. That's probably the most common complaint I hear about , that it looks "cluttered" and "confusing". It's a small learning curve/time to get used to it, for so many benefits, but seems to be a roadblock for a lot of people.
That, and and Discord's marketing budgets!

@subhodeep
Zulip is great! The keyboard shortcuts especially make it a breeze to navigate through. Discord is such a PITA comparatively.

@skrishna Great article, thanks for sharing.

I think the more about “Mastodon has its own culture” is super important.

Yes, it’s expected that those of us leaving the bird site come here with certain habits and expectations.

However, the Mastodon community existed before we got here and there’s a lot we can (un)learn about our relationship with social media from the wider community.

@RayScript
That's a pretty new thing (at least in my experience). Posts used to have pretty equal amounts of both (before the ), but a few PSA posts have been floating around about how favourites do "nothing" and if you like a post you should boost it. So I guess that's becoming the new culture here, but I still prefer to fav for "thanks for posting this" and boost only if I think it's something that needs to be amplified.

I've seen a lot of people saying that liking posts here is pointless, but I absolutely love the way it works - it feels like what this sort of feature is actually supposed to do.

If I put a star on a toot, I'm not trying to blast it to the universe, I just want to quietly inform the poster that I liked or appreciated what they shared. Not everything needs a comment and I don't always have the mental energy to make one, but I still want someone to know that I valued their thought.

What the hell, @Gargron ?

github.com/mastodon/mastodon/p

Why are you really doing that?

Rank username matches same, not lower than display name matches
Use reputation score (more followers than following) as a boost
Use log over followers as a boost
Use gaussian decay from last posted timestamp as a boost
This should bring the results a little closer in quality to the elasticsearch ones...

Please don't do that. We don't want reputation scores and competition, what the hell?

@ceoln
That's true, and an interesting way to look at it. These tools take away the mundane part of struggling with pixels and lines or spelling and grammar, and allow you to express your creativity more directly. I like it!
