@paulczege I see this font in exactly three logos:

1) Sega
2) 1970s Battlestar Galactica
3) FDA

The coffee shop in the courthouse is called "Starting Grounds". I'm Not a Lawyer[tm], but I think a better name would be "Grounds for Dismissal".

It is possible and easy to recognize the limitations and insufficiency of electoral politics and still use voting as one action among many to facilitate change.

Listen to what black people and queer people are saying.

I roll my eyes when the *only* response people have to injustice is "Vote!1!" I roll my eyes more at the idea that not voting is some big brain 5D chess radical move that lets you operate outside the system.

Use every lever of power you can reach. Every single one.

@FeralRobots @njwatt @benni @futurebird Voting for an obscure 3rd party is better than not voting at all, because at least it does send a message. If you don't vote, your action is indistinguishable from those who don't care or find both leading options acceptable.

Ranked Choice Voting (which Portland, Oregon has recently implemented) makes that message even stronger, because it doesn't blur together the voters who prefer the centrist and those who considered it the lesser evil.

It eliminates the "spoiler" effect, which will be crucial in the event that your favorite third party starts getting 20% of the vote.

@MrBerard @RuthFlaherty @edutooters If the house was being foreclosed on, the question of whose house it is gets tricky.

Solution to the Ubuntu terminal not accepting ctrl-c and ctrl-v for copy and paste?

Just change the shortcuts in Terminal > Preferences > Shortcuts.

Still need to send an actual ctrl-c to the terminal? Use ctrl-shift-c.

@Madagascar_Sky

@Madagascar_Sky I don't know, but in the shell whence I launched it it keeps saying:

(blackbox:2): Gtk-CRITICAL **: 14:50:49.637: _gtk_css_corner_value_get_y: assertion 'corner->class == &GTK_CSS_VALUE_CORNER' failed

A web search on this turns up no hits at all.

I'm not saying I'm a living god who walks the earth, but I just replaced a household circuit breaker so

@Madagascar_Sky Yeah, that's the one. If I highlight something with the mouse and hit ctrl-c, it sends the ctrl-c directly to the terminal.

I realize I haven't rebooted since I installed it. I'll try that later today. All computer problems are solved by turning it off and back on again, right?

@mrcompletely It is! It's not a detailed, realistic simulation, but you get to make the right sort of piratical decisions. The toy factor is also fantastic.

Alas, it's woefully out of print.

@at By "a clean git state", I mean no files have changed since the last commit. In other words, "git status" says "nothing to commit, working tree clean".

The git package (which I believe has to be installed as GitPython) gives you functions you can use for this. My code below calls them.

import git

...

def get_git_hash(self):
"""
Returns the current git state hash, or crashes if not in a clean git state (i.e., there are uncommitted changes).
:return:
"""
repo = git.Repo(search_parent_directories=True)
if self.insist_on_clean_git_state and repo.is_dirty(untracked_files=True):
raise Exception('Not in a clean git state! Commit or revert.')
git_hash = repo.head.object.hexsha
return git_hash

I set up my Python code to make sure that (a) we're in a clean git state and (b) we haven't already run an experiment with the same ID number.

This has saved my bacon more than once, preventing either wasting days of computation or overwriting hard-won data.
