@Alon I don't have two months to learn another engine. After this game I will look into Godot. In a possible future where I teach a game dev class, I certainly wouldn't teach my students Unity (or any other proprietary engine that risks enshittified vendor lock-in).

I'm trying to learn to develop multiplayer games in Unity, using the project from Binary Lunar's excellent tutorial:

youtube.com/watch?v=HWPKlpeZUj

If I simultaneously run a local build on my machine (which happens to be a Linux box) and run the game within the Unity editor, I can create a host in one and a client in the other. They play together happily.

I also made a MacOS build and downloaded it on a separate machine. I can run the game there and create a host.

Strangely, if I then try to create a client from the other machine (either the local Linux build or within the editor), I get this message:

[Netcode] Cannot start Host while an instance is already running
UnityEngine.Debug:LogWarning (object)
Unity.Netcode.NetworkLog:LogWarning (string) (at ./Library/PackageCache/com.unity.netcode.gameobjects@1.6.0/Runtime/Logging/NetworkLog.cs:28)
Unity.Netcode.NetworkManager:CanStart (Unity.Netcode.NetworkManager/StartType) (at ./Library/PackageCache/com.unity.netcode.gameobjects@1.6.0/Runtime/Core/NetworkManager.cs:697)
Unity.Netcode.NetworkManager:StartHost () (at ./Library/PackageCache/com.unity.netcode.gameobjects@1.6.0/Runtime/Core/NetworkManager.cs:830)
NetworkUI/<>c:<Awake>b__4_0 () (at Assets/Scripts/NetworkUI.cs:20)
UnityEngine.EventSystems.EventSystem:Update () (at ./Library/PackageCache/com.unity.ugui@1.0.0/Runtime/EventSystem/EventSystem.cs:530)

This only happens if there is an instance running on the Mac!

Of course, the only time you would want to create a client is if there is another instance (a host) running. It's as if the game running on the Mac and the one running in the Unity editor think they're the same program, and therefore refuse to make a "second" network connection.

What can I do about this?

When the dog barks at a delivery, are they protecting you or calling for backup?

@MBoffin Thanks!

I'm pro-FOSS, but the claim on KeePass's website that "you can have a look at its full source code and check whether the security features are implemented correctly" is pollyannaish. Nobody can tell by inspection if a nontrivial program contains bugs or security holes. Certainly nobody has time to read the source code for all the software they use. Deep philosophical questions about trust follow from this.

What's your favorite password manager? I'm looking for something that:

- Automatically syncs across Mac, Windows, Linux, and Android

- Does not use a font that makes I, l, 1, and | indistinguishable.

My current manager fails on both counts.

Woot! My first space opera novel is out today. Kickass women, intrigue, and crime in spaaace!

I hope you enjoy it. ☺️

Kid: The toothfairy left $1.80 under my pillow!

Me: Huh. A $1.80, you say? In what denominations?

Kid: 7 quarters and a nickel....[thoughtful pause]...Mom, do you think the toothfairy meant to give me 2 dollars in quarters but didn't have their glasses on?

Partner: [sprays coffee all over the breakfast table]

yes, my love, I do believe that's exactly what happened.

I was today years old when I realized you can drag/drop people on a gallery zoom screen!

...so that you can move the talking person directly under the webcam so that it looks a little more like you're making eye contact.

In retrospect you probably shouldn't go up against writers in a contest of who can keep doing something longer while not making any money.

So now it's time for me to learn to make a multiplayer game in Unity. (I know, I know, but there isn't time to learn a new engine.)

Perhaps Unity has some tutorials on this?

Yes they do! *click* *click*

Oh.

Did you know that 30-50% of people do NOT have a running inner monologue.

For real!

I’m amazed by that number. How can people be walking around without an inner companion constantly opining, over analyzing or babbling. The silence to me is inconceivable. I am using that word correctly. :akko_wink:

hey sorry I missed your text, I am processing a non-stop 24/7 onslaught of information with a brain designed to eat berries in a cave

@mrcompletely I was surprised because office-supply-grade fineliners and mechanical pencils seemed to work fine for drawing (at least at my level).

Good thing the ceiling was there, or that pup would have floated away.

I want a city builder where you start with a super dense car-ridden city and you have the challenge to build in green spaces and public transit and stuff to increase the happiness of the residents.

@skry The fourth experiment will look in that direction (studying how people talk *about* the game and how it affects their preparedness behavior).
