"While NPR does not receive any direct federal funding, it does receive a small number of competitive grants from CPB and federal agencies like the Department of Education and the Department of Commerce. This funding amounts to approximately 2% of NPR's overall revenues."

That's why they're always begging their listeners for money and thanking their sponsors.

It looks like MoreMountains' TopDown Engine and Pixel Crushers' Dialogue System are going to save us an enormous amount of time on our project.

I'm not saying that demands on my time have diminished with the end of the semester, but I just washed by mailbox.

@FeyTechnologist Yeah, I've heard that optimizing your LinkedIn profile for algorithms is what it's all about.

@FeyTechnologist I don't claim any expertise on how industry works, but I get the idea that a lot of "requirements" for jobs are really wish lists. Apply widely -- you never know what might happen.

Also, I suspect a GitHub repository of projects you've done will carry some weight. Anybody can claim they worked through an online course or boot camp and understood it, but the proof is in the pudding.

Anyone got any suggestions for someone who went through a data science boot camp? Seems like every job requires a postgrad degree and all the intro jobs have university pipelines.

@pixouls If anyone says anything, just tell them you're doing a mukbang.

re: math. logic question

@amiloradovsky @rolltime It's been a while since I've done theory, and I'm not sure I fully understand your question.

You may be able to get somewhere with Rice's theorem, which says that you can't write a Turing machine that, by looking at the code of another Turing machine, determines any property of the language accepted by that other machine. The two exceptions are the property that all languages have and the property that no languages have. This is delightfully summarized as "anything that is not trivial is impossible".

@librarianguish I would've been 9, in a suburb of Portland, OR. We watched the smoke pour out of the mountain.

That was the last time people started wearing masks (because of the ash). Banks were little nervous about this.

math. logic question

@rolltime @amiloradovsky Is it sufficient to note that some functions, like the absolute value function, have no inverse?

Oregonians: be sure to vote today! These local elections are important because congresspeople get started as state reps, mayors, etc.

Hello! My name is Colin and I am a mathematician.

Today is the birthday of Maria Gaetana Agnesi, who wrote the first book about integration *and* differentiation. If you need help making difficult things simpler, give me a shout -- I'm usually happy to help.

@icedquinn

Yes, there are:

gunviolencearchive.org/

The total number of gun deaths per year is about on a par with the number of traffic fatalities.

I agree that most gun deaths are suicides.

@icedquinn @stux

Interesting -- I did not know that!

That said, I think there is some validity to @stux's point: the sort of easily portable, high-powered weapon that is used in the *daily* mass shootings in the US was not widely available at the time.

While I have great respect for the Constitution as a living document, we should also not get too hung up on "what the founding fathers intended", given that most of them were slaveholders.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month!

To celebrate, I'm giving away a copy of my card game Siva Afi: The Fireknife Dance of Samoa.

Boost to be entered in the drawing.

I'd also be interested in meeting any other fire dancers on Mastodon.
