Just spent about an hour deleting a file while maintaining the same functionality. The cost of this refactoring work is obvious but the benefits are ... what's the positive analog of "insidious"?

Suppose you have a prefab Spawner that has a variable frequency and a link to a GameObject SpawnZone.

You instantiate Spawner in your scene, attach a SpawnZone (an object local to scene), and play with the frequency. When you have it the way you like it, you apply the changes to the prefab.

Of course, the prefab will now get your updated frequency and won't get your SpawnZone.

The surprise: Unity also silently rips the link to your SpawnZone out of your local instantiation of Spawner. You have to manually reattach it.

Got some good replies on a couple of channels. In summary:

To find references to a particular component (such as a transform) in a scene, click on the … for that component in the Inspector and pick 'Find Reference in Scene'.

To find GameObjects using a certain script, type the script name (without spaces) in the Hierarchy search bar.

More search features here:
docs.unity3d.com/Manual/search

Things I wish I could do within the Unity editor:

Find all references to a particular GameObject in the Hierarchy.

Search the Hierarchy for all GameObjects with a particular script attached.

Are these things possible? If so, how? If not, why not?

The refresher dialogue you get in 'Return to Monkey Island' when coming back to the game after a couple of days of not playing, asking if you remember where you left off and giving you the option to get a brief reminder of the story so far and your current objectives, or just get right back into the game, is such a neat feature. More games should be doing this, please.

@htdrake's aging iPad is giving out, so she's in the market for a new tablet. Having been radicalized here, we're reluctant to buy a new FAANG machine*. Does anyone have a Linux tablet they love?

This would be mainly for web browsing, occasional email, and some games.

*FAANG Machine is the name of my next band.

I don't recognize that game! Can anyone identify it?

This afternoon has been a demonstration of the DRY principle (Don't Repeat Yourself).

Someone made a copy of a huge, complicated script, made various temporary changes, and then ran out of time before they could sew the patient back up.

That left me to figure out how their script (and associated collections of Unity objects) differed from the one in the other scene.

Handy Unity tip: if you click on an error, warning, or Debug.Log message in the console, you get a stack trace.

It *may* even trace causality through an event system, which would be a huge win.

Working on some Unity code, I hunted down a bug that was caused by a variable not being properly set in the editor.

The name of that variable?

"Variable"

Gyah! Unity's "dig through a vast tree of GameObjects to manually wire things together" approach is going to make me tear out my luxuriant, flowing hair. I can see how it lets a non-coder do simple things, but it does not scale! It's tedious and error-prone.

TIL that the scp command does not, by default, compress files it transfers, and that you need to add the -C flag to make it do that, and by doing that I have sped up my transfer speed about 40x, and without this knowledge I have probably wasted literally days of my life waiting for things in the past.

Finally, a solution to the unfairness of authorship ordering in scientific papers! 😂

Ah, that glorious two days between "it's too cold to leave the back door open for the dog" and "it's too hot to leave the back door open for the dog".
