They sort of lost me when they said that that AI even assisted with "Idea Generation" For hell's sake, even that?
One experience I've had that gave credence to the idea of nominative determinism.
I was once killing time before going to a play in Santa Fe, and wandered into a New Age shop. Suddenly a regular called out to the owner, "Charlotte Anne! Oh Charlotte Anne.."'
A New Age shop owner named Charlotte Anne. That did it for me.
@wvu Do we have any reason to suppose they don't?
Honestly, a crontab entry that simply executes ~/.bash_history every morning at 7 am and half my day's taken care of.
One nice thing about being in a rut is the way bash history comes in so handy to optimize your routine
I'm reminded of a subeditor I used to have to submit articles to, who, when I sent her a message about a lack of professionalism, replied with a long raving screed which included the astonishing revelation that she really wasn't attracted to me at all...
@JamesGleick Shows as a quote on the qoto.org website (which supports quote-tweeting), but only in the detail/thread view; a link in the timeline view.
@ct_bergstrom I'm assuming that if I submit a paper "Fuck Merit, Amirite?" to the journals that declined, I'll at least get a couple of bites, won't it?
@leswarden @juddlegum Also the fourth highest "taker" state, i.e. for taking in more federal largesse than it pays in taxes. Also consistently one of the highest COVID mortality rates, worst environmental record -- poisonous and even radioactive coal slurry in the watershed.... just one hell of a well-run state. Really takes care of its poor.
@ct_bergstrom The Sokal Hoax doesn't need to look over its shoulder at this one.
@ct_bergstrom I'm afraid to look. Does it claim that it was rejected on the grounds that the reviewers rejected the premise?
As a background task I'm currently updating a desktop from one LTS Ubuntu distribution to the next. Using the graphical front-end, yet.
It feels weirdly old-school, like writing a PHP site, or doing anything at all with Windows. I wouldn't have an Ubuntu system at all anymore if the build scripts for half the FOSS projects on Earth didn't assume it. And even then it's better to do it in a container anyway, so why I still have an Ubuntu desktop is anyone's guess. Laziness I suppose.
@PetterOfCats @ct_bergstrom Well it's certainly one of the most power-hungry. Just as crypto starts to tank we find another excuse to burn energy with vast banks of commodity GPUs.
@ct_bergstrom I'm still filtering out tweets from blue checks over there, on the assumption that they're overwhelmingly pay-to-promote. Perhaps he's one of the tiny number of million-follower accounts that Musk has started restoring checks to. Since they can't be distinguished programmatically -- which is why he's doing it -- i can't be arsed.
@ct_bergstrom @trochee @waldok @arstechnica
Goodness yes, I never saw so much action as when I started using a Bored Ape NFT as my dating profile picture.
@Sbectol @ct_bergstrom It's not the kind of formal study where they'd leave the drives in service until they failed. It's the recordkeeping of a private company that needs reliable drives at or near current standards.
So they mostly pull them before they fail. Meaning that this data is, while far from useless, of much narrower use than that to which Ars Technica is trying to put it here.
@davidallengreen Your call is important to us, says the company waiting for me to give up.
@ct_bergstrom @waldok @arstechnica I'm just crying now. Putting the arse in Ars Technica
@ct_bergstrom @waldok @arstechnica
Obviously, in a controlled study that lasted as long as necessary, all drives would eventually fail. But in a real-world production environment like this, the great majority of drives are eventually removed from service without ever having failed.
