@beebrookshire Wouldn't it also imply that even a scientist can't love any science they're not credentialed in? I mean heaven forfend that a microbiologist love astronomy.
@jern Aha! That might be why the French don't go there. That and the lanes are too narrow to carry a baguette sideways on a bicycle.
@jern Ridiculous, the French don't vacation in Duringwich.
Depends where you are. "Suburb" means something quite different in Sydney Australia than it does in Southern California.
For every Shakespeare, Galileo, Bach or Newton this species has produced, we've also come up with at least a million actual or would-be Torquemadas.
I used to have Star Trek daydreams of humanity expanding out into the universe. Now I'm kind of hoping we don't. My ideal scenario is that the best we've done is preserved by some alien civiization in their museums and libraries and used to inform -- or caution -- some rather better beings that what we on balance are.
@carlysagan I used to wonder why we weren't already developing the solar system. I mean, essentially free energy, metals, gases and hydrocarbons in virtually unlimited quantities.
Now I'm actually glad we're not. I'm on the verge of rooting for industrial civilization to fail BEFORE we get off-planet.
@somafm Have you tested the vacuum tubes?
@carlysagan Hmm... to be fair Permutation City infiltrates my thinking a lot as well. And Schild's Ladder...
If it helps, @gregeganSF is on here and he's very worth a follow.
@carlysagan The other one that really pops into my head unexpectedly is Diaspora. If you have an interest in machine intelligence, astrophysics, multidimensionality (gets rather spooky there) determinism and whether subjectivity and/or consciousness actually mean anything..
@carlysagan Good god, I think of this book all the time. It's wild how its ideas infiltrate your thinking pretty much forever.
@thegreenpagesBC GOD DAMN IT
@selzero Well, that depends a little on how much they needed a good laugh and a snort
@SteveThompson Next up, Putin annexes the Sudetenland
@carlysagan Finally the third world will get some medicines?
@RollingStone Sharks are a big problem in Iowa. Restlessly circling the cornfields...
@randahl ""People in Slovakia have bigger problems than the Sudetenland".

@pezmico The thing is, non-doms don't relinquish their property. The rest of us pay inflated prices for housing and other amenities to offshore owners.
I'm all in favor of them pissing off, if they agree to relinquish their holdings before they go.
There may be a self-selection factor at work. I'm a transit user and also pro mask and pro vax. I think a lot of us have that in common. I also avoid unnecessary flying -- I even took the train, overnight, sleeper compartment -- when I needed to be in the bay area this summer. By contrast, the people packing the aircraft are a different set.
@RollingStone "That's what happens when you give your homeless people bus tickets to California."
Whoa whoa Laura, may I remind you some of us are doing very well. My wife has contracts with oil companies I’ve just give new contracts to, she also owns Catamaran Ventures UK they did very well out of the tax payer, so it’s not all doom & gloom #brexit #ToryLies #tory #tories #ToriesOut #toryscum #politics #ukpolitics #Corruption #bbc #news #costofliving #EU #covid #COVID19 #immigration #inflation #Sunak #nhs #energy #rishisunak #woke #netzero #HS2 #torypartyconference #ToryConference
