@AnnemarieBridy I hate to be all "Roy from The IT Crowd", but have you tested a clean Firefox install on a fresh platform?

I've outclevered myself once or twice by breaking things in obscure ways with hacks and plugins, and it turns out to be a trap door: don't know how I made it that way and I don't got time to try everything to put it back.

@AnnemarieBridy All that. Yet I still love how John Deere disabled the tractors Russia looted from Ukraine. It's a weird world, and even "clearly wrong" is very occasionally and narrowly right.

@elizatech "Screenwriters writing characters who don't understand their profession because said screenwriters don't imagine anyone will notice or care" is a frequent annoyance of mine.

@JamesGleick Perhaps they can use the tried and tested Fox News defense: that it's not deceptive if no reasonable person would believe them.

@randahl
I’d like to see Zelenskyy describe to US lawmakers what a real border problem is like.

@kbeninato @GreatDismal I can't confidently predict how long it will be before the sets { on twitter } and { massive sacks of shit } are the same set, but I don't imagine it's that far off.

@cfiesler Endorsed. A false accusation can be incredibly traumatic. Happened to me in the sixth grade and I'm not at all sure I ever recovered psychologically or academically. Make damn sure you're right before you say one damn word.

@fulelo Absurdly, the headline writer didn't understand the article, and perhaps didn't even read it. There is nothing in it about pressure mounting for her to step down. It is however very substantially about rising support for her from the faculty.

@ottocrat Apple sort of reminds me of the Sony products of my youth. Sony went through this phase where they'd provide these combined or shortcut controls with all manner of assumptions about how you wanted to use the device, which was not what I wanted at all. I wanted a switch or a knob for every fundamental function which just did what it said.

Apple makes it easy to do what they think you want to do. Trouble is they cannot in their wildest dreams imagine what I want to do, let alone provide the basic, presumption-free knobs and switches that would let me set it up for myself.

@ottocrat I don't know, but it's probably worth it, because Amazon actively despises you, Google is at best indifferent and at worst sees you the way it's said oligarchs see the Russian people, as "the shit they grow their money in", Apple at least wants to be loved if not actually worshipped, which while not ideal is the least horrifying of the three.

@ct_bergstrom Clearly one should add "I'm muting you" and "I've muted you" to one's list of muted phrases.

@carlysagan No, it's not appreciably different from saline or whatever, so nothing adverse or unpleasant. Other than the fact that I probably look pretty silly for a minute afterward as I tilt my head around and bend well over etc, to get it everywhere in those twisty turny passages.

@carlysagan Re: #5, I've been treating the reports about nitric oxide sprays as credible. The only good source I know of is an Israeli Pharmacy, the product is called Enovid. Got a few bottles earlier in the year before the awfulness blew up over there but I've no reason to think they're not still shipping. It's a little pricy. I use it if I'm going to be spending time around people unlikely to be masked or to distance.

@randahl There now, you see, having just watched The Third Man, I just picture Vienna's sewers.

@ct_bergstrom All supposed human discoveries and inventions were created in the near future by AI, and sent back in time. So really, we're plagiarizing them, not the other way around.

@randahl Russia needs to learn from America's oligarchs: it's very difficult to go on plundering a state which can no longer produce wealth.

@EugeneMcParland
Incredible, isn't it. Anton Geraschenko has reported extensively on this (forgive the Xwitter link). The word that really jumped out at me is "artisanal" -- which in this case appears to mean unqualified mechanical service using parts that are uncertified, worn, and/or maybe even adapted from incorrect.
