Oh, consequences of my own inaction, why are you inevitably here at my doorstep, costing my $9.2 million each day?
I mean, not *my* inaction, but *someone's* inaction. And since it's not *my* inaction, it's fun to watch.
@carnage4life I don’t think I’m buying it. That might explain Spotify, which will never be profitable, but it doesn’t explain the majority of layoffs, which are coming from companies with billions of dollars in the bank and billions of dollars of quarterly profits.
@dangillmor Texas state law prohibits this for plans that are vetted by the Texas Department of Insurance. Federal law applies more recently, too:

If you work for an out-of-state company remotely, as I do, not so much.
@AshleyMarineP Gosh, yes! You nailed it! I kept thinking: would a woman director have ended this film this way? Why aren't women directors given the opportunity to make films like this, but with coherent endings?
Garland's endings have never been his strength, and his self-indulgence may be getting out of hand.
Recent movies I've seen, in reverse order:
_RRR_ is over the top in the best possible way. There were certainly things going on in terms of Indian culture and politics that I didn't understand, but that didn't affect my enjoyment at all. It's a fantastic movie about brotherhood and friendship and how incredibly evil British colonialists were. I loved it!
_Men_ is... strange. Moody, creepy, and then confusing, I'm not sure anyone quite knows exactly what the Cronenbergesque ending is supposed to mean, including writer and director Alex Garland. Still, it's clear in broad strokes, and I don't consider my time wasted.
_Glass Onion_ is great, a worthy successor to _Knives Out_, which remains great. I loved the cameos, spotted the editing trick, and still was surprised by the full reveal. Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig need to keep making these!
_Avatar: The Way of Water_ doesn't need me to say anything, and I think James Cameron literally reads about his story problems as a fetish. Still, I really, really disliked the first Avatar movie, and this one... wasn't bad! It could have been a shorter movie, but I'll admit the visuals balanced out the pacing issues. And sure, our characters end the movie in the same situation they were in about five minutes in, so you might wonder what the three hours were for, but: water! I'm guessing the next movie is when the fire nation attacks.
@malwaretech I think there's an objective benefit to living in the country you're born in and have citizenship in. Immigrating anywhere is pretty hard in ways that people born in that place don't have to deal with.
Whether that benefit outweighs the trouble of the specific country in question is a harder question.
For those who decide to leave the US, you should know that you still have to pay income taxes to the US no matter where you live, forever!
So that kinda sucks. I don't think the UK does the same thing.
@jasontucker @buzz Ideally, ultra popular websites and media sources would have their own instances, and could embed the post from their own instance's infrastructure.
For example, here's your post, but on @buzz's server: https://andersen.social/@jasontucker@simian.rodeo/109780507360319744
For now, everything I try to send to friends and family has my giant anime mugshot as the preview. It's horrible.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon Proud, though?
In theory, I don't think it's wrong to be proud of who or what you are, in addition to your accomplishments. Proud to be Black? Proud to be queer? Fine with me! Just "being" can be an accomplishment when an entire culture wants to erase you.
In practice, I'm not sure "white" people have much to be proud of on balance. There's so much to be ashamed of, and so much taking credit for the results of stolen labor and lives. If I start the game halfway between bases, how proud should I be that I managed to make it all the way there?
I'm proud to be an American sometimes, although not in a way that suggests I'd be any less proud if I were from any other country. More proud of what it aspires to be than what it is.
@zhivi @BlackMastodon What I like about being considered "white:" I don't fear much of anything.
I'm a "white" straight cisgender Christian man, so inasmuch as this broken country tries to do right by anybody, it tries to do right by me. I think that's probably nice, but it's the reality I've known since birth, so I don't *really* *truly* know what any alternative feels like.
@dave Gosh, yes. Even the simplest documentation I've found seems overly complex. When I've mentioned this, defenders say they don't want people implementing ActivityPub without thinking everything through. Which eliminates busy developers!
@bryantd those are some great movies! And also some good ones. I don’t think Jackie Chan has made a bad one.

@ancient_catbus wait, nazis use anime over there? Ugh! They should stop… existing.
