@kims Racism >>> objective self-interest.
At least in the economic sense. But in the psycho-political sense, it's worth freezing in the dark if you can know that people of color have it just as bad or worse.
I guess. I mean, this is what the behavior of white dudes seems to exemplify.
@tillianisafox By the way, there's a lot of wrong information out there on YouTube etc. about what happened and what went wrong. If you want an explanation let me know.
In any case, the explosion yielded about twice the output expected so a lot of unexpected damage was done. Nobody was amused. This test scared the crap out of everybody including the Russians and resulted in a careful re-examination of the whole nuclear weapons program.
@ocparkbuilder Chron job that runs rsync. Done. Just like the big server farms do it.
Or are you running Windows? In that case, I have no idea.
@karlauerbach Good question. I've asked the same question. What Abbot and De Santis did meets the criteria for kidnapping the way I read it. I'm not a lawyer but I can read English. Seems pretty clear to me.
Eat, drink, and be merry because sooner or later the current La Niña will end and be replaced by El Niño.
The current La Niña has been with us for an exceedingly long time, since 2020. A La Niña protects the planet against wild temperature swings. But it must come to an end sooner or later, probably in 2023. So if you thought the weather was wild this year, just wait until we have the next El Niño.
@SexyCyborg Yikes. Scary.
I bought 4 crossflow tests a week ago. They arrived and sat in my mailbox at a temperature of +1F, well outside the allowed range for such tests. The answer to "will they still work"? Maybe.
Great. Thanks a lot. Now I have four tests here that I can't trust.
By the way, I'll be making a batch myself tomorrow. I'm tired of me and my friends scouring all the stores around here every day for eggnog. It's ridiculous. Making it is not that difficult.
@freemo Yes. Thank you velly much.
@freemo Aha! Thank you. My friend signed up a couple months ago and chose to approve followers and now wants to disable that.
@freemo Hey, Doc, not to change the subject, but I was looking for a friend for the Masto control that let's you approve followers or not and I can't find it.
It used to be under Profile / Approve Follow Requests.
I don't know about in your area but here in West Virginia, all stores have been out of stock of eggnog since the start of December. Walmart, Kroger, Target, all out of stock all month.
The reason is not a mystery. I thought maybe it was an egg shortage. But no. Virtually all the eggnog in the the country is made by one conglomerate, United Dairy. The decision for how much to make for the season was made in early November. Normally, they count on a 5 percent increase in demand each year. But this year demand is running 60 percent above their estimate and because it's a huge corporation, they can't react in a matter of weeks.
If the eggnog was made locally, makers could react in a few days. This is one of the downsides to giant nationwide companies making everything. Maybe lawmakers will consider history and examine the 1930s again when they don't have their eggnog this year.
@QasimRashid All true. The self-destructive behavior of Republicans truly astonishes me.
Latino immigrants are extremely diligent and eager about paying their taxes, buying a home, paying property tax, etc. Unlike most USians, who complain and avoid taxes as much as they can.
On the other hand, it's all about power. Republican politicians know that a large segment of the population responds strongly to xenophobia and hate, so that's what they push in the hope of taking over.
City of #Buffalo "Emergency Alert Center" appears to be a rather dismal failure. Either 1. No dedicated Emergency Manager, 2. Emergency Manager trapped/unable to update and no backup or 3. They forgot they have an Emergency Alert system. #Buffalo #ArticBlast #Disaster #Wx https://www.buffalony.gov/AlertCenter.aspx?AID=BLIZZARD-WARNING-IN-EFFECT-FROM-7-AM-FRI-3
@tillianisafox Speaking as an engineer, yes, it certainly is. An example being the Castle Bravo thermonuclear test -- unintentionally the largest the U.S. ever detonated.
It was supposed to deliver around 6 to 10 megatons but ran away to 15 megatons due to physics we didn't yet understand at the time. It worked considerably better than expected. Oops.
Nuke tests were never supposed to discover new physics but this one did.
honestly, i feel like the best thing i got for #christmas this year is #mastodon
