8 January 1894 | Fr. Maximilian Kolbe, OFM, was born in Zduńska Wola.
As a prisoner of Auschwitz (no. 16670) on 29 July 1941, he sacrificed his life to save a person selected for starvation death after an escape of a prisoner. On 14 August 1941, he was murdered with a phenol injection.

@neroden @politicalfinger Yes, voters want strict masking requirements and governors have the power to do that and a lot more, already authorized by the Supreme Court long ago.
But, the voters don't call the shots in this country and governors are afraid to use their power because they fear a minority will take up guns and start a civil war.
So here we are, still held hostage even after two million Americans have died.

The rapidly deteriorating situation in Israel -- with Netanyahu ("Bibi") rushing to turn the country into another theocratic Iran to cement his own personal power and evade criminal liabilities, is an example of how tying a country's government to religion in such ways -- and that means ANY religion -- is always ultimately a path to anti-democratic fascism, and discrimination against anyone and everyone not fitting the racial/religious/sexual government edicts.
It could occur here as well, and there are many -- mainly in today's fascist GOP -- working to try make this happen as soon as possible.

@toomas_ilves Agreed. Putin will stop at nothing until forced to do so. Turn up the heat. Every day we delay allows the Russians to regroup and conscript more 12 year-olds from Siberia. Turn it up and push the Rus out of Ukraine and Crimea. Nothing less.
As far as nukes, let him threaten. He's hopelessly overmatched in this arena by enemies whose warheads actually detonate when they hit the target because, unlike the Russians, we maintain ours. Restoring Russia to its former greatness will not happen if Russia is erased from human history for the next 500 years. He knows this.
