@woozle Exactly. My daughter used to manage two Radio Shack stores at once, and very successfully. She's been a ham radio operator since she was 14. One key to her success was continuing to cater to the electronics geeks despite the store turning into a cellphone store. They'd come from miles around because they knew she had what the needed. And then they went out of business.
Radio Shack management REALLY screwed up. When the modern electronic hobbyist boom took off, they were unprepared because the store was full of cellphones instead of Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, perf board, and parts.
@clacke My whole city here in West Virginia would have to be redesigned and rebuilt. It's car-centric and unfriendly to bicycles and pedestrians.
The newest addition (20 years ago) and the primary shopping area is a strip almost two miles long connected by a narrow, sharply curved winding street that's dangerous for cars. There are lots of accidents because of the blind curves and people driving way too fast. It would be extremely dangerous for a bicycle so there are none. And it's impossible on foot. There's no place to walk, no sidewalk. Here is where all the major stores and fast food places are located, Walmart, Lowes, Kohls, Sams, Kroger.
It's the darnedest design I've ever seen, intentionally designed to make it impossible to walk from one major retailer to another. You HAVE to drive a car or motorcycle.
@axios It's always seems disingenuous and weak to me when an aggressor uses the word "retaliate".
Intrusive contact between the sedimentary, Eocene Claron Formation below and the quartz-monzonite Pine Valley Mountains laccolith above. The Pine Valley laccolith is the world's largest example of such a pluton. Around 21 million years ago, magma intruded within the Claron Formation at a depth of about 200 m, shallower than is typical for a laccolith, allowing the magma to spread far laterally and dome up higher than normal. #geology #geoscience #igneous #Utah #pluton #laccolith #naturalhistory

One of the most blissful moments of my life was when #DavidCrosby played "Tamalpais High," from his masterpiece "If I Could Only Remember My Name," live for only the third time in history, and dedicated it to me. @alanferrier Meanwhile in the US: "People still get pensions?"
@purplepadma @jaz @fkamiah17 I should add that this doesn't matter. I use a server located in France that's operated by a USian.
@purplepadma @jaz @fkamiah17 Yeah, no. There are few servers in the US compared to other parts of the world.

@TheRaDR It is indeed garbage. I'm old and was raised by strict old-school German parents. In that culture, you ARE what you do. Your vocation is the most important thing -- doctor, truck driver, farmer. When introduced it's the first question. You're instantly judged on that basis and pigeonholed into "your place" in society. I lived the first 40 years of my life with that world-view and I can assure you that it's not a good way to live your life.
Fortunately, 30 years ago, I realized this attitude is flat wrong. It changed my life and I've lived accordingly ever since.
