@Npars01 @ChrisMayLA6 Yes, it's easy to overlook the rarely-discussed mechanisms that finance the oil companies. Those companies have worked for 150 years to lock themselves in. Big oil used to be a measure of progress so subsidies were justified for this important business. Those subsidies are baked into the fabric of government. not just in the U.S. but around the world.

On top of that, the oil companies spent the last century getting treaties from every country where they operate. If those countries (including the United States) interfere in any way with their business, the country owes vast sums of money in damages. For smaller countries, these sums are often larger than the entire net worth of the country.

So we're stuck.

@openculture I know plenty of college grads in the U.S. that would choke on every single one of those topics.

Mullin claimed he only paid himself a $50,000 salary and "invested every penny" into his business. But he'd reported his private-sector salary at $92,000, with another $200,000 in income. #MarkwayneMullin #GOPLiars

Senator Markwayne Mullin ran a multimillion-dollar plumbing business and claimed he only took a $50,000 salary. His financial statements show otherwise. 09-MAR-2023 businessinsider.com/senator-ma

With all the arguments over whether MAGA Republicans are fascists, I reread William Shirer’s “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich” to see how much the rise of Hitler and the rise of MAGA smell similar.
Conclusion: They do. This thread lists 10 ways. Please take a look.

1. A big lie about treachery is used to foment resentment.
Nazis: We didn’t really lose World War I. It was a “stab in the back” by Jews and other "November criminals."
MAGA: We didn’t really lose the 2020 election. It was a “steal” by politicians and Blacks in big cities.

2. There’s an obsession with purity of the culture.
Nazis: “Racial mixture” was a threat to Aryan culture, Hitler wrote.
MAGA: “Great replacement theory” says immigrants threaten white culture.

3. Chaos is something to be exploited, not addressed.
Nazis: Economic distress is a great political opportunity.
MAGA: Economic distress is a great political opportunity.

"Please don't think Trump supporters are not paying attention to Trump's quoting of Hitler or his pledge of revenge against all those he deems the enemies of America. MAGA gets it and they LOVE it. Bluntly, there is a real danger to all of us who reject MAGA and their fascist agenda."

A verified account that has drawn millions of views for posts that lionize Hitler and deny the Holocaust said that it’s been paid $3,000 this year by the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Their leaves may have mostly long fallen, but for a brief moment at sunset the trees on the street were all shining in a brilliant golden orange.

Further update: The quasi-stationary low pressure system spinning west of CA continues to confound. At this point, widespread and notably warm soaking rain event still appears likely for most of the coast from LA to north of Mendocino, but heavy totals unlikely. #CAwx t.co/dlauysG9T0 t.co/POPH8olHIJ

I've reached the point I wish I could just delete all the screenshots and memes about fascism in my phone. I can't. I'm not old enough to remember the holocaust but I was friends with a woman who was in Auschwitz with her grandparents. She told me how she survived.

The news I've seen today tells me we are in horrible danger and we MUST TAKE THIS SERIOUS.

"The boss is not going to leave under any circumstances. We are just going to stay in power." - Trump comms director Dan Scavino after the 2020 election. For some mysterious reason, Scavino is not yet spending the rest of his life in prison, and many Republican voters still consider themselves "patriots" rather than traitors. abcnews.go.com/US/boss-leave-p

@ai6yr Looks like an electronics engineer lives here. I wouldn't be showing that in public.

(It's an old joke since the 1970s at least that you can recognize an engineer's home because it's full of HiFi and stereo equipment, none of it working properly.)

I really try not to post things from the old hellsite. But this is too good.

Been too busy to post while attending my niece’s four-day Indian wedding in Texas. A whirlwind of amazing events, and an incredible gift to be welcomed into another culture and enjoy each part of the wedding experience. My mind is blown!

@casjo2022 @lovelylovely Yes. Sounds outrageous, unbelievable, over-the-top, nobody would believe it. And that's exactly how it's done.
