@trysdyn we agree with your conclusion but for what it's worth, it's been something like twenty years. people who hadn't even been born when the XMPP thing happened have grown up and now have opinions on it. nobody automatically knows history, especially history they weren't there for.
When social media moved away from posting snapshots of moments, and pushed everyone to post video, something very fundamental changed.
Photos are passive. You walk through them at your own pace. You pause to contemplate an idea, or recall your own experience that connects to the photo.
Video in comparison will consume your attention. Especially edited video. Fast edits. Loud edits. No time to absorb. It's aggressive and dominating.
@lymenzies Can't it have both installed and boot to either?
The United States- aided by an exceptionally corrupt Supreme Court- continues its genocide of native people by denying tribes water.
@jonny it seems to me we should aim to have a separate SSO provider in case we ever want to leave mastodon.
@pulkomandy
Oh. How far do those isolation properties go, beyond Linux's ? I guess #Plan9 is the practical gold standard for that.
Windows games used to basically run in kernel mode, as I recall reading. So, it may not be a bad idea for selected apps. And it is different from running as root, thanks for pointing that out.
Anyway, its already a happy situation, having a freely-available desktop-oriented OS in #HaikuOS
@abhas BTW, how did IISc handle turnover in network admins? From what I have heard, its basically students, and they do move on.
@abhas ow! How will they indigenize an existing standard! Where will they host it? I think NIC has a cloud but, capacity?
The most generally-useful thing any of them can do is bring #ISCII as default, in SMS for a start, and some real "scientific" work in making it usable to type in Indic languages. They can't secure SMS, but they can use smartphone penetration to supplant e-mail in other ways. They probably won't.
@asbestos @Elizafox Meta did pay billions for Whatsapp. We likely can't think things through like them, especially outside their environment and without the information they have. As many say, they may federate juat to avoid looking monopolistic, but they can spew ads out if some pointyhead there makes a case for it.
@jonas @Elizafox usability is something #DeltaChat devs say drives their design. Does that not work for you?
Lets not quibble about wire protocols in a world where Cisco Jabber had good uptake in its target markets, and Google Chat and Whatsapp supposedly were/are basically closed-off #XMPP Chat over e-mail is #OK
@Elizafox thanks for writing this. this seems to be an important fallout of "no algorithmic feed", a good tweak in user attitude towards platforms. also, the choice of words - responsibility instead of control - 🕭
@pulkomandy
Thanks for clarifying. I was trying to understand Haiku's approach to (desktop) OS design, and thought a comparision to kernel-mode Linux was valid. So, single-user doesn't mean "run everything as root"? Cool!
@unfa
@pulkomandy
Fan here 🤩
Is there a virtualization layer? OpenBSD, Plan9, have vmx and the like, to run non-native apps under Linux, and create the choice of using the base OS as a daily driver.
Or is running #HaikuOS in a VM on a different base OS the way to use it as a daily driver?
Also, BTW, is the OS design adjacent with KML - kernel-mode Linux?
@unfa
@unfa well it's my main OS at home. I end up writing a lot of apps myself and fixing a lot of bugs in the OS and not getting much else done. It works reasonably well for my use now (xmpp chat, some web browsing, writing code for haiku itself and for old and/or obscure computers)
A lot of apps from Linux are available now, that's useful but nothing new, and that wasn't really the goal for Haiku. A lot of apps remain to be written…
@m it would only prevent them from migrating to an instance that blocks meta (if meta implements this feature, which I doubt they would)
Users could still migrate to any instances that don’t block meta.
This is a preemptive call to #Fediblock Meta's P92/Barcelona instance, for three reasons at least:
1. it'll be huge and extremely poorly moderated;
2. it will be a privacy nightmare, allowing Meta to extensively profile Fediverse users with greater ease;
3. it will be used to EEE the Fediverse in the same way their “support” for RSS and XMPP was used to wipe them out from the general consciousness with a rug-pull (my full thoughts on this: http://wok.oblomov.eu/tecnologia/credible-threat-1/ )

@idle_automaton ever curious about Haiku ... for data sync, is Syncthing not portable/ported to Haiku ?
