@Jbat

Or can't as it would be a legal minefield.

I wish this lady good luck,

@Jbat
Agreed and having paid money for a blue tick, how do you then kick off the far right and others. ?

@NatalieDavis

So what happens if someone hides a gun in their clothing, on the above basis they would ban clothing.

How is learning about the Holocaust indoctrination?? it is history, if the US can't learn about the Holocaust, then it will probably never be able to look at how the native population were and are still being treated badly, let alone how Black people are still being treated

@wynch

We have had similar incidents in the UK, afro hair violating school policies.

]Trump is like a spoilt brat, he won't take any responsibility for his actions, by victim blaming and mocking victims, he just makes it worse for them. He needs bringing down to earth with a massive bump.

He should be hauled back in to court and sued AGAIN, for calling the victim a whack job, thing is he can afford to pay huge fines, having a fortune is of little use when you are in rikers alongside every one else.

It is amazing what we accumulate over the years and what then lurks at the back of cupboards / drawers etc

@joeinwynnewood @Tilopa@convo.casa

Thank you for all this, complex issue, and scary that the GOP seem to be putting their own political agenda before the country. But I am starting to get a clearer picture.

Thing is if a law was written in 1917, the US was engaged in WWI, so wars such as that do cause a country to incur more debt. So that could explain the 1917 law. So, it makes sense regarding the pandemic too, that the country would incur debt.

So how much of the US population understands all this and also understands what is actually at stake here.?

@Tilopa@convo.casa

Part the issue i see is the US or at least a huge proportion of the population is simply asleep at the wheel, while this is happening, MAGA are getting stronger, not weaker, gun crime and mass shootings are a way of life, healthcare is in crisis, and a host of other issues.

If the US did default it may provide the wake up call the country / world needs, BUT at a terrible cost. However, based on another fedi post (not related directly) if a lot of people in the US thinks that a 1/3lb burger is smaller than a 1/4 lb burger then the chances of them understanding about the debt problem are perhaps minimal.

@SteveCooke

No problem, just asking.

It could be an option though. However rather than just trying to tell people to stop using oil, we could try the approach of suggesting alternatives, or for the govermennt to get on with building the infrastructure to allow renewables to connect to the power grid.

Here in Torbay we are all ready to go, we are building a solar farm, only thanks to the delays in other infrastructure it can't be connected to the power grid, and may not happen for another 5 years.

Totally rediculous, we should be have been building this infrastructure years agom and recruiting people (of any age) t help do so.

@Tilopa@convo.casa That makes sense, iirc with normal loans you can pay off grandually or all at once, however the latter can come with additional penalties.

I think the one thing in Joe Bidens favour, or at least according to the BBC news, is that if the Debt is defaulted, the blame can't all but put at his door. The GOP are I think obstructing progress on the issue, so could cause the country to have no chouce, The GOP would then try and pin blame on the Democrats, which they may think gives them a chance in 2024, however that could easily backfire on the GOP and help Biden win next year.

@Tilopa@convo.casa

If the BBC and ITV were not so obsessed with something called Eurovision, they could perhaps focus on getting an expert in to explain about the current financial situation in the US and the impact on defaulting would be.

@Tilopa@convo.casa

I know the UK has national debt, but we are paying this off. How did the US get in to this mess?

@SteveCooke

On a sligtly different note, but on the topic of protests, are there any stats as to how effective the internet blackout protests are. The ones where we put a banner on our website landing page.

@Tilopa@convo.casa

What is the difference between this and the previous goverment shutdowns where they stop paying people for a week or two, then seem to carry on as normal, at least until they have to do it again.
