@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond That's a good point, but users will always have the option of a hard/clean migration.

@freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @skyblond That's plausible too. But it really depends on how the scales fall in the long run. If they run more risk of users leaving to greener pastures, they'll defederate entirely and have their walled garden. If they can exploit the free content from the fediverse for profit without losing customers, they'll stay federated.

Their biggest disadvantage is their size. If masto instances can keep light on their feet, and ahead of Meta on features, they can lure the users away. If not, Meta will likely soon dominate (at least their corner of) the fediverse.

@admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @freemo @skyblond I'm pretty confident Meta will defederate themselves soon enough to make that a moot point.

@AbandonedAmerica I feel like part of that is the attempt to fill the dopamine-deficiency left behind from leaving an argument-filled troll platform...

@admitsWrongIfProven @trinsec @freemo @skyblond Right, but that'll take years, long after they've captured the user base they want to squeeze.

@trinsec @freemo @admitsWrongIfProven @skyblond Pretty sure Meta is trying to provide additional value as well that justifies dealing with the ads. Towards this end, they're attracting big tentpole accounts, will have customized algorithmic feeds that few masto servers offer, and, tbqh, they'll probably end up raising the bar on UI intuitiveness for the whole Fediverse with time.

@jann Right, but can't they usually achieve that for free in the hotel with the TV there, or with an iPad? Why go somewhere where they have to subject themselves to a children's cartoon too?
Maybe they just have an on-vacation "need to do something" and going to a movie is the least something they can do to fulfill that need.

@jann Ah, gotcha. Interesting; maybe Disney's other indoor attractions just aren't quite so affordable.

@jann Right, but Disney Springs is free to enter. The parks aren't.

@jann People don't come to Disney World to watch movies, though. After paying hundreds of dollars for tickets, they want to get their money's worth, not spend two hours doing something they could do at home.

@mloxton You sure that was thunder and not an earthquake or a gazelle stampede?

It began with the forging of the Great Platforms. 3 were given to the Blueskies, self-assessed wisest and fairest of all. 7 to the Twitter Edgelords, great memers and alt-right craftsmen. And 9, 9 rings were gifted to the race of Mastodon, who above all else desire content warnings. But they were all of them deceived, for another platform was made. Deep in the land of Meta, in the Fires of IG, the Dark Lord Zuck forged a federated platform, and into this he poured his cruelty, his malice and his

"I am not the Lord of Darkness" Ron DeSantis calmly assured reporters while signing a new bill that bans Florida citizens from uttering the phrase "Lord of Darkness".

The final flare in the landing really clicked for me finally today. I wasn't just going through the motions; I understood how and why it worked so I was able to make adjustments on the fly and achieve smooth (not just safe) landings.

My approaches however... could use some work still. Came in too high and fast on two regular traffic patterns, but did much better on an extended pattern.

If all goes well, I'll be making my first solo flight in about two weeks. Very excited.

@ThinkingSapien That's such a strange concept. "Hey for-profit business, stop favoring your profits over your competitors!"

@jeffcliff @Recorderist So you were one of the lucky ones who got in on the Ponzi scheme early enough to profit 🤷‍♂️

While I agree that the general idea of using cryptographic currency has its benefits and is the inevitable next step for money, the current state of the "cryptocurrency" industry is manifestly not that. The continued reliance on the failed blockchain data structure and the lack of regulation has caused an unchecked proliferation of confidence men, self-dealing, and rug pulls. And that's before you get to the energy usage in a world desperate for more renewable production.

For cryptocurrency to be truly viable, it needs to have minimal impact to financial and energy infrastructure, and needs to be backed by a reputable authority that people trust to not SBF their funds away.

Idiots across the lake from me are setting off big fireworks... while it's still broad daylight 🤦‍♂️

What a waste.
