@asymco Hearing Alex Vetter (CEO Cars.com) explain the increase in car demand (USA) as related to more remote work. Does that even make sense?

"Almost a third of the nurses in the United States are considering leaving their profession after the COVID-19 pandemic left them overwhelmed and fatigued, according to a survey."

Foreign Affairs article from August of last year "China’s New Vassal -
How the War in Ukraine Turned Moscow Into Beijing’s Junior Partner". Well, the world chess championship between Ding and Nepomniatchi (Chinese vs Russian) was just won by Ding.

Can't ask for better symbolism in news events.

I saw a trailer for a movie "The Reading" - I guess it is a horror flick where people are trapped in a haunted house that starts with a seance or something like that. But my fantasy version is that people are trapped in a conference room forced to endlessly discuss a terribly written academic paper (hence "The Reading").

Which do you think would be more scary?

@Pat Too late. America is very well armed and addicted to anger. It may start off as a non-violent revolution, but it will be near impossible to contain, sadly. In principle, the system can change peacefully, eg, by amending the constitution. I'm not holding my breath. The Equal Rights Amendment came close back in the 1970s, but ultimately came to naught.

When is the most recent time you found facts/data at odds with your beliefs, and this caused you to change your mind?

Been too long, hasn't it?

@paul Let's think this through. Suppose every firm did this. Then there would pop up new businesses that offer to build/manage/optimize instances. Effectively, these new services would be "authoritative". And then there would be centralization/hosting, improving with new features, search, apps, and connectivities. Yes, we can see how the pendulum would swing, just as it always has.

@jacobsimmering So I asked ChatGPT what does the R stand for: "The research component involves gathering information and conducting experiments to understand the feasibility and potential of an idea"

@jacobsimmering Good point. And to make it even stronger, I read that when business types classify expenditure as R&D the "R" doesn't mean Research the way that scientists mean R. There may be no invention in R, just building infrastructure and other stuff. So, even worse than what you say.

In pharma, I guess the goal of a researcher is not to see the ideas through to application, but just stop at "promising" and hope it will get picked up elsewhere.
